Max Cooper has a PhD in genetics, making him another of the variety of doctorates floating around the electronic music business. I don’t know why that is, but I do think it’s a little bit unfair; I’m really going to have to insist that people only be good at one thing from now on. Max Cooper’s been around the electronic music world for a good old while, he’s been producing music since 2007 and is now operating out of London. This is really smooth, and while it does sparkle a fair bit, it’s a controlled build of texture over time that doesn’t do anything that’s going to put people out. ‘Waves’ is the first single from Cooper’s second album ‘Emergence’ (25th November, 2016), and it’s soft, pleasant, almost shoegazey fare, that sounds kind of organic. The construction is quite precise, as for something that’s pretty ambient in nature there are a lot of moving parts, which makes it ear-catching but not busy sounding enough to detract from the overall relaxing vibe. I adore it as background music, it just seems to flow through you pleasantly and then see itself out, which makes me wonder if the whole album is like that. If so, it’s probably going to be a very chill listen indeed.
