Daily Dose: ‘Laca’ by Makeness

I reckon this is marvellous, and at just under three minutes, it is surprisingly compact for this type of electronic music (although when spun into the companion track Langa it is a meaty eight). This dude is from the Outer Hebrides in Scotland, and appropriately, I have no idea how to pronounce the title of this track, which appeared a couple of months ago. First heard this on the Radio in an interview with the guys from Jungle, who mentioned how they were mates with Makeness and had booked him for The Warehouse Project. Incidentally, the Jungle duo, Tom McFarland & Josh Lloyd-Watson, sound like two of the coolest folks you could ever hope to meet, as well as having great taste in music. This is absolutely swell; it’s like a Caribou decided to get very sinister and add humming basslines a la Vessels, and the result is a really full sounding enjoyable blast through electronic space and movement. Guy owes Jon Hopkins a debt as well, but he certainly does his influences justice here, and I will be looking out for more of his work. This is just the sort of stuff that I absolutely love, and it’s produced so well to give such a fantastic feel of fullness to it whilst still sounding expansive. One of the best tracks I’ve heard in the New Year so far.
